iCcold Information

The iCcold solution is a series of road markers used to warn approaching traffic of potentially dangerous driving conditions due to frozen road surfaces. Each marker is embedded within the road so that it is flush with the road surface. When warm, the markers are gray in color and essentially unnoticeable to the driver. As the road temperatures near freezing (around 3°C), the markers begin to change color becoming noticeably brighter as it gets colder. This continues until 0°C when the markers are completely changed. The marker remains colored at all temperatures below freezing and reverts back to gray once the road warms up again.

How effective is your system in preventing accidents?

Our system provides a real time alert that surface conditions are at freezing temperatures. Recognition of that danger and modification of behavior is dependent on the accompanying signage to inform the public of the significance of the change in color and the reaction by the maintenance team to apply appropriate surface treatments.

Can your system be customized to meet specific company needs?

Since our system is plastic based it can be customized in a number of ways at an additional cost. Shape, size, texture, color and logo opportunities are all possible to meet individual requirements. Custom quoting is required.

How is your system installed?

Detailed installation instructions are provided on this web site. For high wear applications we recommend flush mounting the system with the surface as outlined in the detailed instructions. Other options may be possible for customized applications.

Why do you recommend your system be replaced every two years?

UV light degrades the chemical compound used in our system. While our system uses specialized UV inhibitors to extend its life we suggest replacement every two years to maintain the maximum color intensity. Some users may wish to replace their units less or more often depending on their individual environmental conditions.

How visible is your system?

Visibility is critical to the effectiveness of our system. We have done motorist studies to recommend minimum placement standards which we feel will make the system highly visible to a motorist. See additional data on this web site regarding these studies.

Is your system cost effective?

In many cases, if we can eliminate one accident, the system will more than pay for itself. We can assist you to determine a return on investment for your specific application.
